Natural History - Seniors

Easy/Moderate Hike. After a long winter of frigid temperatures and snow-covered landscapes, hibernators begin to stir and awaken from slumber. Some have slept through the whole winter and others have awaken here and there. Some have even given birth while still snoring away. Hike around the foothills with volunteer naturalists as they share how some animals use dormancy to survive the winter.

Dona A - Volunteer Naturalist

My childhood memories are endless joyful hours playing amidst miles of orange and avocado groves in Orange County CA. Summer camps and wilderness training in the Sierra and Rocky Mountains fostered an intense curiosity of nature’s many-layered secrets through self-reflection, learning, and the sharing of those secrets with others. After too many years working in Silicon Valley tech I have emerged to celebrate the natural world in Boulder County. Come celebrate with me!

I got a BS in Zoology and did graduate work in Wildlife Management, but spent my career in IT as a programmer and network architect. Now that I am retired, I can spend more time enjoying nature. My favorite topics are wildlife, nature photography and astronomy.

Throughout my life, I’ve gained strength by venturing outdoors with others. My most defining memories are of backcountry skiing, bagging CO 14ers, and trekking internationally. These adventures have given me a healthy respect for mother nature, wildlife, and the environment. After years of working in marketing for tech companies, it is my hope that the volunteer naturalist program will help me transition to something closer to my heart.
