Cultural History

Join cultural history volunteer Amy Scanes-Wolfe for a deep dive into the founding of Longmont--from the inside out. With a colorful collection of personalities, newspaper articles, and anecdotes, this talk will give a realistic look at what it took to get Longmont off the ground. We’ll start by looking at the historical context that gave rise to the Chicago-Colorado Colony or Longmont. We’ll look at the obstacles that came with settling this part of the “Great American Desert” and how people overcame them--sometimes tragically. And we’ll do this through the lens of the settlers themselves, including several families whose homesteads, names, and artifacts still color the county today. Registration closes July 25 so no one misses an email with the Zoom link the day before the program. The program's first few minutes will ensure that everyone is connected knows a few ins and outs of Zoom.

I’m a Colorado native; I grew up in Golden and moved to Greeley to attend UNC. I earned my undergraduate and MA degrees in history. That led me to museums, where I’ve worked for over 20 years. As of December of 2010 I’m excited to have Boulder County Parks and Open Space as my workplace. There’s fun, constant learning, and variety in being the Cultural History Program Coordinator; I get to work with amazing and talented colleagues and volunteers as we share the history of the area.
