Hi There! Thank you for registering to volunteer with Boulder County Parks and Open Space! Our volunteer community is essential to stewarding this beautiful landscape, and you are an essential piece of that! For our volunteer event on Saturday September 24th - National Public Lands Day! - we will most likely be collecting native seed for use in ecological restoration throughout the Boulder County Parks and Open Space system. If you've never heard of a native seed collection...just you wait! Native seeds are the bee’s knees! Using native seeds in re-vegetation efforts is essential to restoring native plant diversity and food webs, and creating resiliency in our special ecosystem. However often times, native seed is not available commercially - they are too expensive, or the available seeds are not ecologically appropriate. This is where you come in! Volunteers help our restoration efforts by hand-collecting a variety of species, including grasses, wildflowers and others over the course of the summer and fall. Staff monitors seed development ahead of our scheduled project, at a variety of open space areas, so the exact location of our project will be determined within a week of our project date. Project details will be sent to registered volunteers within a week of the project. Since seed collection depends 100% on mother nature, it's possible the plants may not produce enough seed for a sustainable harvest. In that case, we may have to shift activities to another restoration-related activity (weed pulling, planting plants, or other).
