Natural History - All Ages Welcome

Join volunteer naturalists for a fascinating hike through geologic and historical time, as we explore ancient mountain-building, alpine glaciation, and the history of hard rock mining in the high country. We will also identify diverse plant and animal communities and look for signs of wildlife on this moderate 4-mile (round-trip) hike.

Roger M - Volunteer Naturalist

I got hooked on being in nature as a kid wandering the palmetto scrub and backwaters of west coast Florida in search of critters and fossils. Though a third-generation geologist, I’ve never earned a dime with my geology degree. For 3 years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, I taught secondary school geology, chemistry, math, and general science. A second degree in graphic design led to a career in technical and scientific illustration. I have been volunteering as a naturalist since 1976.

Sue C - Volunteer Naturalist

I signed on to the BCPOS Volunteer Naturalist program in 2001, but, in reality, I have been a "naturalist" my entire life! Every aspect of the natural world intrigues me and, amazingly, it has the power to simultaneously lift me up in awe and take me to my knees in reverence and profound thankfulness! My interests are birds, native plants, geography and their related eponymy and over the last decade I have focused on the field identification and ecology of birds of prey.
